Core Principles of AEO

(Not SEO and What Actually Works)

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (also called Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so it gets cited and used by AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Grok, etc.) when they generate answers.

Traditional SEO = "How do I rank #1 in Google search results?"

AEO = "How do I become the source that AI systems trust and pull information from when answering questions?"

The goal has shifted from getting clicks to becoming a trusted, citable source.

Here are the highest-impact things right now (ranked roughly by importance):

1. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

• This is the foundation. AI systems are trained to favor sources that demonstrate real expertise.

• Strong author bios, credentials, case studies, and original insights help a lot.

2. Clear, Well-Structured Content

• Use clear headings, short paragraphs, and direct answers.

• AI systems love content that is easy to parse and summarize.

3. Original Research, Data, or Unique Perspectives

• One of the strongest signals. AI systems prefer sources that contribute something new rather than just repeating what everyone else says.

4. Author & Entity Signals

• Consistent author names across the web.

• Author pages with bios, photos, and links to other credible work.

• Mentions of you/your brand on other reputable sites.

5. Technical Foundations Still Matter

• Clean site structure, fast loading, mobile-friendly, proper schema markup.

• These help AI systems crawl and understand your content.

6. Conversational + Question-Based Content

• Content that directly answers real questions people ask performs better in AI systems.

7. Brand & Entity Consistency

• Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) and branding across the web helps AI systems understand who you are.
